This piece depicts an outcrop in the Palisades Interstate Park on Henry Hudson Drive near Fort Lee, New Jersey (40.861853, -73.956019). The evidence from the rocks shows oscillating "sea level" in an ancient rift lake. Changing climate conditions due to variation in Earth's orbit cause the lake level to fill and desiccate. The water level of the lake affects how well oxygen penetrates to depths of the lakebed, which in turn controls the zone's habitability. Low oxygen leads to fewer burrowing organisms. The lack of burrowing prevents all the sediments from getting mixed up, preserving the thin seasonally deposited layers in detail.
